Allah says to His believer slaves Become helpers of Allah's Din. Become helpers of Allah's Din. Become assistants of Allah. Help Allah's Din to face the enemies of Din. Become helper of Allah's Din and make full preparations for this help. Make preparations according to your power and capacity. Learn archery. Learn horse-riding. Become so big power that you may awe and terrorise Allah's enemies. The Holy Prophetﷺ says: اَلْمُومِنُ الْقَوِیُّ خَیْرٌ وَ اَحَبُّ اِلَی اللّٰہِ مِنَ الْمُومِنِ الضَّعِیْفِ... The mighty and muscular believer is better and dearer to Allah than the believer who is old and weak.
Have a look at the atmosphere of Makkah and Madinah. No negligence and lethargy was found there. Every individual who got ready for helping Allah's Din, muscularised and solified his body and worked hard making that strength a target. If we study the letters written by Hazrat Abu Bakr and Hazrat Umar to their governors and commanders, we find that they forbid them of everything that makes man's body weak and lethargic and order for everything which solidifies and activates man. After Salaat, the Holy Prophetﷺ would supplicate daily, O Allah, I seek refuge with You against negligence and lethargy." Once, a few Sahaabah went to the Holy Prophetﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we feel exhaustion." He said, "عَلَیْکُمْ بِالنَّسْلَانْ Fling arrows." The cure for exhaustion was flinging arrows. They said, "We start archery and all our exhaustion vanished within a few days. All illness, worry and disease vanished.
The Holy Prophet'sﷺ life is a model for us as The scholars have written about it that Sahaabah would get persuasion to see the Holy Prophet'sﷺ beautiful handsome, powerful and active body. They also tried to become like him. The journey from Makkah to Taif wherein lie hills, stones and thorns is not in a common man's power. The Holy Prophetﷺ wrestled. It proves that it is a Sunnah. How great physical power does a man need to wrestle? And wrestling was with those wrestler of Makkah Mr. Zukaana who was matchless in power. He beat him thrice. The Holy Prophetﷺ would do archery in the best possible manner. This is also a Sunnah. We are to take up this model also. How great physical power is needed for archery. Do archery or ask an archer about it. It needs strong fingers, strong wrists, strong triceps of arms, strong shoulders, strong chest, sturdy back and mighty legs. Man can do archery if all the above organs are strong otherwise nothing. Sahaabah put in hard labour in archery because it was Allah's dictate and Sunnah of the Holy Prophetﷺ as he had persuaded them to learn archery. Allah says, "مِنْ قُوَّۃٍ Learn archery." They would practise it for hours and fling arrows in battles for hours without feeling any weakness or exhaustion. This is also model of the Holy Prophet'sﷺ and his Sunnah as well as practice of Sahaabah. Allah ordered for horse-riding, stated its excellences vowing with the horses who raid early in the morning. It becomes known that there is no sleeping in the morning. A Mu'min is to ride the horse in the morning and the horse is to attack in the morning. They are also to dig up the soil which has got wet due to dewdrops. They are to create the situation that the voice from the High-Throne comes This scene brought Allah's words to the earth to describe this scene.
How dear an active Mu'min to Allah is! Frivolity and worldly talk in the Masjid are from the signs of the Day of Judgement but when archery and spearing were practiced in the Masjid; they were allowed by the Holy Prophetﷺ. The reason is that horse-riding and horse-racing with the intention for Jihaad are the deeds due to which Allah's angels come down on the earth as they come down at the time of Allah's Zikr. In the same way, when the believers gather, learn and do archery; the angels come down as they come down at the time of Allah's Zikr.
Cowardice and illeness is a disgrace for a believer. That's why; refuge with Allah has been sought at it. Sahaabah would say to the Holy Prophetﷺ, "O Messenger of Allah, supplicate for the removal of lethargy and cowardice in us." Lo! See! the job of the Mu'min is to become helper for Allah's Din which requires strong study body which may undergo hard labour.
Allah vows with Makkah, man's father and son, "O My slave, I have created you for hard labour. If you undergo this labour for the sake of Allah' Din, you will progress in this world and he Hereafter. If you give up hard labour and take up luxurious life, so many hard labours of the world will be imposed upon you." If you study explanation of this Surah minutely, you will learn the importance of taking exercise and solidifying your body.
The sorrow is that people build up their bodies for beauty, worldly contests and fame but do not take up this thing as a mission to help Allah's Din. The Holy Prophetﷺ says "Every of your deed concerning pastime except Allah's Zikr will be included in frivolity except four things: walking between two targets of archery. It means, you learn archery. You make one place a target, stop at another place and fling arrows. Then you go to that place to watch whether the arrow has struck the target or not. This movement is very dear to Allah. It is not included in frivolity. Rearing and taming the horse with the intentions of helping Allah's Din is also not included in frivolity. Allah is pleased at this deed and Allah's angels also come down. Swimming is the best exercise of the world. People are persuaded to solidify their bodies in many religions of the world solely with the object of gaining health and activity. So people are taught Yoga, martial art, kicking and blowing in the air. The objects stated for them are those of animals not of humans. Contrarily, Islam persuades to all the above things greater than all the religions but this task solidifies body as well as wins reward. This task improves health as well as accumulates assets for the Hereafter. Islam persuades the Muslims to learn swimming by stating great excellences of naval Jihaad. Have a look at the excellences of Jihaad which contains naval Jihaad about which, the Holy Prophetﷺ says, "There are great stages of those who get killed in the sea, the excellence of vomiting and feeling giddy in naval Jihaad and special excellences for the great first naval troop." Only that person who knows how to swim, how to wrestle, how to fight the waves of the ocean can wage naval Jihaad. This is persuasion as well as use, exercise as well as object of exercise. This is not just solidifying the body.
Allama Ibn Qayyim writes, "Think over the things like horse-riding, archery and swimming whom the Holy Prophetﷺ does not call frivolities." Its worldly benefit is that it removes tension and mental ailments because the biggest cause of mental maladies is man's inactivity, idleness and indulgence in useless things. When tension grips the mind, worries and anxieties visit him. Then come drugs and smoking. Then comes the stage of hem, heroin, cocaine and wine. If man takes up the things recommended by the Holy Prophetﷺ i.e. walks briskly, rides the horse, does archery, swimming and wrestling, tension does not come near him nor do worries attack him nor is his body inclined to sensualities and sins. The body will be built and that man will be ready for the deeds of the Hereafter. He will neither show negligence in Salaat nor feel pain in going to Masjid nor face any trouble on the eve of Hajj. Besides all this, it will become easy for him to perform the obligation of Jihaad.
That's why; all the good and true Muslims from Sahaabah onward who have the yearning to become helpers of Allah's Din, who are anxious to perform every Islamic obligation including Jihaad properly have never shown any negligence in building up their bodies. They never deliver themselves to the doctors, quacks, physicians and false practitioners. They make their best efforts to solidify themselves so much so if they cannot move about due to some handicap, they keep the other parts of body using so that they may help Allah's Din in one way or the other.
Estimate the might of the Islamic troops of the early period. Sahaabah did not eat much nor did they use any tonics. But when they confronted the wrestlers of Rome and Persia, they would carry them up from upon the backs of their horse and threw them down violently. When a Mu'min intends to build his body, his physical and spiritual capacities combine and make him powerful in the world. When Sahaabah heard excellences of Jihaad and this warning from the Holy Prophetﷺ, "Whoever learns archery and forgets and gives it up has no link with us," they would do archery in old age even when it was very difficulty for them to walk. If the doctor says to someone that he is on death-bed, he will die if he does not walk on foot, he begins to walk on foot. But if man takes these steps to help Allah's Din, Allah strengthens his faith at every step, emboldens his soul, blesses his body and heart with health because Allah likes the sturdy believer. Whomever Allah loves, blesses him with all good.
The dire need of today is to chalk out a mission, an objective and a charter to persuade every Muslim to become helper of Allah's Din and take exercise to perform all obligations of Islam properly to become Allah's grateful slave. Some people's occupation gives them maimum exercise but those who have to work sitting at the table and those who have been gripped by liabilities should include these things in their routines. The scholars of Din should persuade the people to it not feeling upset at the remarks of the people, "You do not do so yourself but persuade people to it." Blessings of persuasion make the deed easy for the persuader even. Dozens of proofs are found in the Holy Quran. Hundreds of proofs are found in the traditions of the Holy Prophetﷺ. Stating them, the Ummah can be persuaded to the fact that every Muslim should take exercise to make his body healthy and powerful. He should strengthen his claws, arms, chest, legs, heart and mind for the good-pleasure of Allah to perform Allah's duties, become dear one of Allah and to become helper of Allah's Din. He should not become the one who fears when he hears loud voice, nor should he lick someone's feet getting afraid of awe and terror rather he should become the one who stands firm. Whoever does so in solitude or among the people will find a reward with Allah if Allah wills.
Have a look at your surroundings. In our society, no one likes religious people walking briskly or playing a game. Then cast a glance at the situation in Madina. Allah's Prophetﷺ was passing by when Sahaabah were practising archery in the form of two teams. How enviable would that atmosphere be? Do we find such situation today? Seeing the Holy Prophetﷺ, the Sahaabah held up their hands. He said, "Fling arrows. Fling arrows. I am also with a team. I am with this and you should compete from other team." The other team held up their hands. He said, "Why have you held up your hands?" They said, "How can we dare fling arrows against you?" He went to them. "We can't fling arrows," they said. He said, "Do archery. I am with both teams." Then he participated from the side of both. He flung arrows sometimes from this team and sometimes from that team. Just take the example of this tradition. How enviable was the atmosphere? How great exercise and sport is there in archery? Placing the arrow in the bow is a minor deed but later on one comes to know how great power its flinging demands. How strong should be arms and fingers? What type of back and legs should be? Sahaabah put in so hard labour that could hit any eye of the running dear. The deer runs so fast that the present day guns can't chase it. Archery demands so much power and labour.
Exercise is the need of the hour now. The Muslims are gripped by diseases. There is a great rush with false practitioners because people are caught by fallacious and mental diseases and worries. Much of it is due to idleness. Allah be praised, abundant mail is received by me. People write about their strange diseases. Thinking over them, I infer that it is all due to lethargy, negligence, sleeping in the morning, sleeping at odd hours and eating at odd hours. Then they think, "We have fallen down. We are finished. Satan has prevailed over us." They shift every responsibility to the shoulders of the Satan. Someone has written me today "I feel giddy while reciting Sunnah supplications. What's the reason? Maybe I have grown weak or visited by gas trouble." When gas rises to the mind, man feels an unknown unrest. He can neither read nor think. Then ungratefulness to Allah starts as, "Why did this happen to me?" You should walk briskly or run a little and do not let gas prevail on you. Correct your body and mind. All worry will vanish. Sometimes, they are visited by doubts against someone as, "He has done this. He has done that." Nothing is done by anyone. It is gas that prevails the mind and weakens the body. It is a fact that the weak person can think about sorrow, miseries and griefs as he is to sit idle and lie all the time. These tasks can cause only trouble, worry and grief. Then there are cases of dreams, "We see such and such type of dreams. Someone has blown incantations on me. Some other has let loose a giants on me." There is no magic, spell or giant nor do the giants have so spare time to always trouble humans. They have their own duties to perform. They have their own families and children. They are very busy as they are also Allah's creature and they are duty bound. They are to establish Salaat, observe fast, perform Hajj and take part in Jihaad. Allah has created jinns and humans to worship Allah. They are not always to rush at people. This is just gas trouble in humans.
A man faced heart trouble. He went to a doctor who was very holy not like the present day doctors who catch the patient as their easy pray by enumerating different diseases and showing him several tests so as to grab all his wealth. But that doctor was a holy man. He examined him thoroughly and said, "You have gas trouble. I think you remain sitting most of time and do not do any manual work nor move your body." Movement has blessings in it. Construction of human body is that if it is used, it can remain active for centuries. If its use stops, it is finished in weeks. If man stops seeing for eight to nine days, his eyes forget how to see. If man stops hearing for ten to fifteen days, his ears forget how to listen. You have gas trouble." He said, "Gas troubles me so much that I begin to fly." He said, "Gas makes the aeroplane fly. You are very small."
To sum up, our negligence, disheartedness and irregularities work behind the problems whom we consider our mental diseases, magic and spell. The Holy Quran persuades us to work hard, take up activity and solidify our bodies as we have been ordered to learn archery We have been advised to learn archery as much as we can. It becomes known that Allah has ordered us to make our fingers, wrists, muscles of our arms, strong, eyes capable of seeing to see far off, chest, heart, back, and legs strong. This is Allah's dictate because Allah has ordered us to learn archery to become the biggest archers. Only that man can become big archer whose limbs are strong. The man who holds an arrow in his hand; when he flings it, it falls ahead and he himself falls back; how can such a person do archery?
Horse-riding demands great physical power. Hazrat Umar says, "Ask your children to jump up to ride the horse. وثب (Wasab) is a word in Arabic. It means, "Stop the horse, jump up and ride it without any support of the hand." He said, "Teach this to your children." If you seat the man who has not rode a horse before, he will not be able to rise from the bed for a week. The middle part of legs will be injured. Every of his part will feel pain. Allah has ordered us to rear the horse, tend it, ride it so that He may vow by our horses. It means that Allah has ordered us to be sturdy. Why are we so negligent of the dictate when Allah and His Messengerﷺ order us to be strong and muscular? Think over this question. Try to make intentions the very today. Ask forgiveness from Allah at all the past negligence requesting Allah to grant you with the power and capacity to do so in the rest of your life so that your body may remain in a position to wage Jihaad, perform Hajj, establish Salaat and observe fasts. Ask forgiveness from Allah at past mistakes and start this deed. Then persuade other people to it. و آخر دعوانا ان الحمدللہ رب العالمین
